What Is Fascial Manipulation?

Fascial Manipulation® is a manual therapy method developed by Italian physiotherapist Luigi Stecco and advanced through the research of Professor Carla Stecco and Assistant Professor Antonio Stecco. It focuses on fascia, the connective tissue that wraps and links every muscle, bone, nerve and organ.

The clinician links a patient’s current symptoms to their history, forms a hypothesis about which part of the fascial system is involved, confirms it by palpation, and treats specific points to restore glide. It’s a structured, repeatable framework, which is why it can be taught and certified.

What Clinicians Say

Trusted by Physios, Osteos & Chiropractors

I recently completed Level 2 with Jack Williams in Melbourne. The 15 hours of pre-course webinars delivered by Carla and Antonio Stecco themselves were worth “the price of admission alone”. Jack is adept, confident and approachable, with a profound understanding of the material. Fascial Manipulation has added another dimension to my clinical skill-set — I’m already looking forward to Levels 3 and 4.

Alison SlaterAlison SlaterPhysiotherapist

I’ve completed Level 1, am close to finishing Level 2, and plan to continue to Levels 3 and 4. Of all the fascial approaches I’ve trained in, this is the one that’s most reshaped how I work — it’s far more systematic and precise than what I’d learned previously. Jack is an exceptional instructor, with clear teaching and post-course catch-ups between modules. I strongly recommend it to any manual therapist wanting a more precise, effective and holistic practice.

Simon RobinsonSimon RobinsonOsteopath

The Fascial Manipulation Level 1 course was exceptionally well-structured and provided a strong foundation in assessing and treating the myofascial system, with a particular focus on the deep fascia. The skills I gained have been highly applicable in a sports and musculoskeletal clinical setting, deepening my understanding of how the fascial system relates to both acute and chronic presentations. I would highly recommend it to practitioners wanting to advance their clinical skills and understand how previous injuries influence the body’s coordination and function.

Upcoming Courses & Workshops

Choose Your Starting Point

Our Fascial Manipulation courses and workshops are capped at 12 participants, so places are limited. Upcoming dates are listed below, with full details and booking on each course page.

Physiotherapists Osteopaths Chiropractors Myotherapists Remedial Massage Therapists*

Final-year students in physiotherapy, osteopathy and chiropractic are also welcome. *Eligibility for remedial massage therapists depends on experience and training background.

Practitioners from other professions with a qualification in hands-on assessment and treatment may also be eligible. As the method is hands-on, a manual therapy qualification is required — exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, personal training, yoga or Pilates qualifications don’t on their own meet this requirement.

Unsure whether your qualification fits? Enquire here and we’ll let you know.

Common Questions

Everything You Might Be Wondering

Do I need any prior experience with fascia work?

No. The Introductory Workshop assumes no background in fascial techniques, and Level 1 starts from the foundations. You’ll need to be a manual therapist or a final-year student in physiotherapy, osteopathy or chiropractic, but no fascia-specific training is required.

Can I enrol if I’m a personal trainer, exercise physiologist or yoga teacher?

Not on that qualification alone. Fascial Manipulation is a hands-on assessment and treatment method, so the courses are for practitioners trained in manual therapy — physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, myotherapists and, depending on experience, remedial massage therapists. Qualifications in exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, personal training, yoga or Pilates don’t include training in hands-on treatment. If you hold a manual therapy qualification as well, you’re welcome to enrol. If you’re unsure, email education@melbourneathleticdevelopment.com.au before booking.

What’s the difference between the Workshop and Level 1?

The Introductory Workshop is a one-day introduction to help you decide whether the method suits you. It’s not a prerequisite. Level 1 is the full course: online lectures delivered by the Steccos plus three days of in-person practical.

How is Fascial Manipulation different from other approaches?

Fascial Manipulation uses a structured assessment and a detailed anatomical map to decide where to treat, which may be some distance from the painful area, and treats small, specific points. See how it compares with massage, myofascial release, dry needling and other methods.

Is the method evidence-based?

It builds on detailed anatomical research into fascia, much of it from the Stecco research group. Clinical research on the method itself is growing but still at an early stage. The Science page sets out what the research does and doesn’t yet show.

Do I need to complete the levels in order?

Yes. Each level builds on the skills, particularly palpation, developed in the one before. Level 1 is the entry point for everyone. See how the four levels fit together.

What actually happens during a course?

You’ll complete online lectures covering the theory, then attend in-person practical days focused on palpation, assessment and treatment, in groups of no more than 12 for closely supervised practice. Level 1 graduates can also book an optional one-day Masterclass to consolidate their skills.

Where are Fascial Manipulation courses held?
